1881 – Thurles Celebrates the 4th of July

When America celebrated its Independence Day in 1881, there were 38 states in the USA . Or was it 39? Perhaps carried away in the celebrations, some Thurles Yankophiles swapped John Bull for Uncle Sam and put on the enduring rural Irish fireworks display – the blazing tar barrel.
