9.20am: Introduction:Professor Maurice Bric, Director of the Daniel O’Connell School.

Opening Address:

Mr. John O’Donoghue, Cahersiveen.
John represented South Kerry as a TD for a number of years and later served in a number of ministries as well as Ceann Comhairle. He and his family were also involved in developing local government in Kerry both before and after the independence of the State.

9.40am: Kerry and the 1916 Rebellion

Moderator: Owen O’Shea
Owen is Communications Officer for Kerry County Council. He is co-author of the recently-published Kerry and 1916.

Speakers:

Professor Brigid Laffan
Brigid was born and raised in Cahersiveen and is Director of the Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute in Florence. She will speak about her grandfather, Mortimer O’Connell. Mortimer was from Ballinskelligs, was involved in a number of episodes during 1916 and later served as Clerk of Dáil Éireann.

Dr. Dermot Lynch
Dermot is a doctor in general practice in London. His father, Fionán Lynch, took a prominent part in the 1916 Rebellion in Dublin and was a member of the Four Courts garrison. He later served as a minister in the Cumann na nGaedhal governments of the 1920s before being appointed as a judge by the government of Eamonn deValera in 1944.

Michael Clifford
Michael was born and educated in Cahersiveen and is one of Ireland’s leading journalists. He will talk about his grand-uncle, Tom Clifford from Clahane who fought with the Irish Citizen Army during 1916. Tom died in 1970.

Junior Murphy
Junior is a retired second-level teacher from Cahersiveen and has written on the history and people of his native South Kerry. He is also President of St. Mary’s GAA Club and Co-Chairperson of the organising committee. He will talk about the men and women of South Kerry who participated in the events of 1916.

12.00pm Ireland at Mid-Century

Speaker:

Professor Rhona Richman Kenneally, “The Transformation of mid-Twentieth Century Rural Ireland”. Rhona is Professor of Design and Computation Arts at Concordia University, Montreal. She is currently completing a book on the impact of new domestic technologies (such as electrification) on mid-twentieth century domestic space in Ireland. She has also a special interest in the history of food.

5.15pm Con Keating Park GAA Park, Cahersiveen

Chair: Jimmy Deenihan
Jimmy was first elected as TD for North Kerry in 1987 and most recently, served as Minister for the Diaspora. He played senior football for Kerry and won five All-Ireland medals. He was named as an All-Star in 1981.

Speaker: Jack O’Shea
Jack was born in Cahersiveen and is a long-standing member of St. Mary’s GAA. He played Senior Football for Kerry between 1976 and 1992, won seven All-Ireland medals and was awarded six All-Stars between 1980 and 1986. He was also Footballer of the Year on four occasions and represented Ireland in nine tests against Australia.

10am: Recording O’Connell and his World

Speakers:

Professor John Horgan, “Daniel O’Connell and the Press”.
John was Professor of Journalism at DCU and Ireland’s first Press Ombudsman. He is also a former Senator, TD and MEP and has written extensively on the history and nature of journalism in Ireland. He was also a journalist and reported on the Second Vatican Council for the Irish Times. A collection of essays was recently published in his honour.

Professor Maureen Murphy, “Askenath Nicholson’s Visit to South Kerry in 1845″.
Maureen is Professor of Teaching and Curriculum Studies at Hofstra University, New York. She has published widely on many aspects of Irish studies for which as well as for her work in Irish Community Support, she was named to the Presidential Distinguished Service Awards in 2015.

Professor Paula Murphy, “Dublin’s O’Connell Monument: Commemoration and Controversy”.
Paula is Associate Professor of Art History and Cultural Policy in UCD and is an expert in the area of 19th and 20th century Irish and European Culture.

12.00pm 1916: Wider Contexts

Speakers:

Dr. Pat Cooke, “Pádraig Pearse and the Cult of the Victorian Gael”.
Pat was Director of both the Pearse Museum and Kilmainham Gaol. He is currently Director of the MA in Cultural Policy and Arts Management in UCD.

Dr. Richard McElligott, “1916 and the GAA”.
Richard teaches the ‘Uncovering 1916’ and the ‘Irish War of Independence’ courses, which are hosted by the National Library of Ireland. His first book, Forging a Kingdom, The Gaelic Athletic Association in Kerry, 1884-1934, was published to critical acclaim in October 2013.

2.15pm Kerry’s Cycling Tradition in History and Fiction

Speakers:

Dr. Paul Rouse, “Cycling in Rural Ireland”. Paul is Lecturer in the History of Sport in UCD. His Sport and Ireland: A History was published by Oxford University Press in 2015. He also writes a regular column on sport for the Irish Examiner.

Jane Urquhart, “A Short Reading from The Night Stages (2015)”.
Jane is one of Canada’s leading writers and an acclaimed international novelist. Her work has been recognised by numerous awards including the Governor General’s Award. She was also awarded the prestigious Order of Canada for her services to literature. Jane is a long-time visitor to South Kerry and her 2015 novel is set during the Rás Tailteann.

3.15pm O’Connell’s Kerry

Speakers:

Joseph Lynch, “Tomás Rua”.
Joseph is from Valentia and is a retired national teacher who taught for several years in Kildare.

Breandán O Cíobháin, “The Placenames of South Kerry”.
Breandán is a former Higher Placenames Officer with the Ordinance Survey of Ireland and author of an acclaimed series of papers on Irish place names.
