Frugality pays. It certainly pays when you’re a bachelor herring salesman in Tipperary Town with a regular cash stream flowing in from Australia. £1,000 in 1893 would be worth somewhere in the region of €130,000 these days. Having died intestate one can only imagine the scramble that went on amongst the far-flung distant relatives to get their hands on it. As the old saying goes, “Where there’s a will, I want to be in it…”
