Irish Economic & Social History Journal

  • News

This annual journal has been published by the Economic & Social History Society of Ireland
since 1974, so that 2023 saw the publication of the 50th volume.
A full run of this important periodical has been donated to Tipperary Studies.

Unlike Irish Historical Studies which very much focuses on political history, this journal probably has more
popular appeal as many of its articles deal with the stuff of everyday life rather than high politics.
For example in vol. iv (1977) articles deal with flour milling, roofing and the Ford Motor
Company. In other issues all kinds of topics are covered: cattle smuggling, banking, tobacco,
income tax, funerals, equal pay, cotton, wool, murder, greyhound racing, chimney sweeps,
infanticide, policing and so on.

Over fifty years an extraordinary range of topics have been discussed.
Readers are welcome to consult issues of this journal at Tipperary Studies.
