Dr. Pádraigín Riggs Launches New Tipperary Historical Journal in Thurles
Distinguished Tipperary scholar Dr. Pádraigín Riggs launched the latest edition of the Tipperary Historical Journal on Saturday, July 5th. A native of the county, retired UCC lecturer, and member of the Irish Texts Society Council, Dr. Riggs brought her expertise in Irish literature and local heritage to this celebrated annual publication.
The 2025 journal offers a compelling 252-page journey through Tipperary’s past, blending rigorous scholarship with untold local stories. This volume explores diverse themes, from the lives of women in 19th-century Tipperary and the dramatic rise and fall of Marlfield Distillery, to German recordings of the county’s last native Irish speakers and the impact of pivotal events like the 1908 Old Age Pensions Act. Other highlights include railway history, tenant struggles, poetic memoirs, architectural legacies, and commemorations of the Decade of Centenaries.
Richly illustrated with rare photographs, maps, and primary documents, the journal appeals to historians, genealogists, and anyone passionate about Tipperary’s heritage.
