3rd Brigade operations Map digitised

  • News

In December 2021, Tipperary Studies received an historic map on loan from a Tipperary family whose ancestors were involved in the War of Independence. The map which has been cherished by the family for decades was kindly loaned so that a digital copy could be made for future generations.  The map has a range of different annotations added by a member of the IRA and appear to detail operations relating to the 3rd Tipperary Brigade such as routes, possible arms dumps, safe houses and planned ambushes. A digital copy may be viewed at http://www.tippstudiesdigital.ie

Tipperary Studies is working in collaboration with the Heritage officer who has commissioned Abarta Heritage Ltd. to undertake a project whereby the public will be invited to engage with the map and to explore the potential meanings behind some of the annotations and markings on it. This is part of Tipperary’s Decade of Centenaries Programme and we are delighted to be involved in this Landscapes of Revolution project.
