Preserving Tipperary’s Gravestones in 3D

We are delighted to host a groundbreaking digital collection here at Tipperary Studies.

In a first for our service, we are hosting a stunning archive of 3D photogrammetry models documenting the graveyards of Tipperary. This collection, created by expert archaeologist Caimin O’Brien, uses cutting-edge technology to revolutionise how we document and preserve our local history.

More Than Just a Photo

You might ask, what exactly is 3D photogrammetry?

It is a technique that transforms ordinary photographs into detailed, interactive 3D digital models. But this is no simple point-and-shoot operation. Each single model in this collection required 200 to 300 high-resolution photographs to be taken from every angle. This immense effort highlights Caimin’s dedication to preserving a record of these sites. Time and weather are steadily eroding these stones, but thanks to this work, the intricate carvings and inscriptions are now preserved. We are incredibly grateful to Caimin for kindly sharing this extensive work with us.

Explore the Collection

The depth of this project is astounding. So far, the collection features:

  • 488 detailed models of headstones.
  • Coverage of 37 Tipperary graveyards.
  • Special curated collections highlighting the unique work of different stone masons.

You can rotate, zoom, and inspect these historical artefacts from your own home. It is a fantastic resource for local historians, genealogists, and anyone with an interest in the craft of stone-cutting.
