Des has been very involved in historical research for over four decades. He is an annual contributor to the County Tipperary Historical Journal and is also its present editor.

His most recent publications are County Tipperary in 1916: a history in 40 documents and The 3rd Brigade: a history of the Volunteers/IRA in South Tipperary 1913-1921.
