The Nationalist, 26 August 1942
Tipperary voters have a long tradition in supplementing their ballot papers with verses of a satirical kind*, and the tradition was renewed once more during the 1942 Local Elections. One wonders what inspiration this Fethard voter would have derived from the Troika, bank bailouts, “New Politics”, pay-by-weight bins and Irish Water?
*In December of 2011, as part of the Tipperary People and Places Lecture Series, Dr. Denis G. Marnane delivered a lecture on the subject of “Ballot Box Verse”, which can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egzv1cUck2Q
