County Tipperary in 1916: A History in 40 Documents

“County Tipperary in 1916: A History in 40 Documents”, the latest in Tipperary Studies’ Finding Tipperary series, is a collection of primary sources telling something of the story of 1916 in the County. Through the reproduction of excerpts from letters, diaries, newspapers and sworn evidence the actors and bystanders, reflecting a variety of opinions, speak for themselves. As with any babble of voices, the truth is faintly heard. This meticulously researched publication by Denis G. Marnane and Mary Guinan Darmody puts lie to the notion that “All was quiet” in Co. Tipperary before, during and after the outbreak of The Rising.

The launch of the booklet took place on the 13th February in Thurles Library, attended by a large crowd. Speakers at the event were Roisin O’Grady (County Heritage Officer and Ireland 2016 Co-Ordinator for Tipperary County Council), Seamus Hanafin (Chairman of Tipperary County Council, who launched the booklet) and Denis G. Marnane and Mary Guinan Darmody (co-authors). The publication is free of charge and available now in all Tipperary library service branches throughout the county.
