Carrick-on-Suir census from 1799 online at Virtual Record Treasury Ireland
Dr Ciarán Wallace of the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland (VRTI) a free public resources funded by the Department of Culture contacted us with some exciting news. The VRTI are working to digitally recreate, as far as possible the archival collections destroyed in the battle at the Four Courts in 1922.
Amoung those records is a census of Carrick on Suir from 1799. This remarkably complete listing of every householder in the town was digitised and generously shared with the VRTI by the British Library. The text is fully word-searchable. It contains some wonderful detail for local historians, for example Bridget and Ellen Lyons of Lyons Lane in the town, each listed as a ‘cyder woman’.
The website is free to use and you do not need to register or make an account or anything.
The attached prompt sheets (as Gaeilge and in English) may be helpful when using the Virtual Treasury. They show how to search for records on the VRTI, and also how to search for a word within a digitsed document.
The VRTI census expert Dr Brian Gurrin has been adding names to a Population Portal , where all census-type records are gathered. They have just exceeded 100,000 (!) names recovered from the lost censuses between 1766 and 1891. Brian has tracked down names from every county, including Tipperary of course.
You will also find mentions of many places within Tipperary in the following collections:
- Map Room – a huge range of maps and drawings shared by 11 partner archives and libraries
- Dublin Gazette 1750 – 1800 – Don’t be fooled by the name – you’ll find news and gossip from all corners of Ireland!
- State Papers Ireland: 1660 – 1715 – a collection of letters between the English governments in Dublin and London
- Cromwellian Surveys – on the confiscation of lands across Ireland in the 17th century
- Royal Revenue, 1270 – 1450 – lists of rents from land, payments and fines, customs on goods, court fees, and taxes.
The VRTI are constantly adding to their collections so keep and eye on the News & Events page.
