Lecture Tuesday 20th October
‘Might be better designated slaughterhouse’ – Auxiliary Workhouses in Ireland.
John Flannery will be giving this talk on October 20th and it is not one to miss.
Drawing on reports from the Tipperary Vindicator of 1849, John digs into the grim reality of the Workhouse system – specifically the Auxiliary Workhouses used as overspill during the Famine years. He looks at the buildings chosen for this purpose, and the Limerick Chronicle coverage of two tragedies in Killarney and Limerick where fifty-six young girls and women lost their lives.
John is a local historian and former President of Ormond Historical Society, Nenagh, with an MA in History of Family from UL. He is a founder member of Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution.
Come along and hear this remarkable piece of local and national history.
