In November 1999, some people were somewhat troubled at the thoughts of the dawn of the new millennium. At midnight on New Year’s Eve, the “Y2K Bug” might cause planes to fall from the sky. Computers would short-circuit, resulting in our bank accounts being cleared out. And this was 1999, remember, so the chances were that we actually had something in them worth losing back then. The Mayans – or was it the Aztecs? – predicted fiery Armageddon. Not quite Armageddon, but not far off it, came to pass, however, in November, when it was announced that the price of the pint was going up…
