Tipperary tenants in the early 19th Century
The report into the Disturbances in Ireland in 1824 makes grim reading; Tipperary was under the insurrection act, the people were almost starving and could barely eke enough for survival from their few acres yet they were compelled to pay rent and tithes about the value of their land. Sometimes more than once. If they could not they faced eviction. Small wonder the countryside was in revolt.
