Thomas F. Burke, born in Fethard in 1840 and moved to New York with his family in 1852. He took part in the Civil War in the United States and his military experience saw him sent to Ireland to command the Tipperary section during the Fenian uprising in 1867. Sentenced to death for high treason he was due to be hung, drawn and quartered before public outcry saw this commuted to life imprisonment. He was released in 1871 and returned to New York.
