1974 – The North Board Plays “The Sunday Blame”

RTE regularly gets it in the neck from sports fans, but perhaps the station’s harshest critics have always been the members of the GAA, who, understandably, want their games held up in the best possible light. A glimpse at the social media comments after every edition of The Sunday Game will bear this out. In this snippet from 1974 The Sunday Game’s predecessor – the whimsically named Sunday Sports Show – is in the firing line. The members of the North Tipperary GAA Board tuned in to see its coverage of the 1974 All Ireland Football Final, and what they saw left them less than best pleased. Cartoon characters were referenced. And the word “ridiculous” was mentioned. And the word “disgusting”…
