As part of national Famine Commemoration Week local Librarian Maura Barrett charts the impact of the Great famine on the region, the industrial heritage of the Famine Works, the decline in population, the resulting skirmishes and insurrections, and the impact on modern day Carrick

This year’s National Famine Commemoration will take place in Ballingarry, Co Tipperary. The event, which will involve the local community, will be held in the Famine Warhouse 1848, the OPW national heritage site in Ballingarry.
