1861 – Butler Rolls Out the Barrels in Ballypatrick

A report on the visit of James Edward William Theobald Butler, the 3rd Marquess of Ormond, to one of his family’s former strongholds. A few weeks ago we dealt with the demise of the grand court of Kilcash, and this excerpt shows us that, while the Butlers may have all but left the demesne, there remained around Ballypatrick much affection for them. Mind you, there weren’t too many communities in Ireland at the time that wouldn’t have shown one great affection had they supplied them with eight barrels of free porter. Well, it’s what “butlers” do, isn’t it?:
