1965 – Burying the Hatchet in Cashel’s Leahy Park

The inaugural Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship was played in 1965, and it didn’t get off to an auspicious start. In fact, it got off to a disastrous start, as the final, played in Cashel between Cork’s Glen Rovers and Waterford’s Mount Sion, had to be abandoned with nine minutes left on account of crowd disturbances. Scuffles broke out behind one of the goals and the matter was raised soon after during a meeting of Cashel Urban Council. There, the blame for the kerfuffle was laid squarely at the feet of the Cork supporters who, it was claimed, brought with them implements normally used for preparing kindling and battling Choctaw Indians. The Munster Council got wind of this, and swiftly addressed the matter at their meeting the following week…
